On behalf of the D-Zero committee it is with great pleasure that we can now announce the inaugural D-Zero national championships will take place at Calshot sailing centre on the 23rd to 25th May 2015. The event will be supported and run alongside Sail Racers – Sail Fest 2015. Further details will follow in due course. However training is planned for Friday 22nd May with the championships taking place on the Saturday, Sunday and Monday. Accommodation and camping is available on site as well as a class dinner following racing on Sunday.
We are sorry that we have had to delay this announcement, but due to circumstances outside of our control the class has had to look for alternative venues to suit. We as a committee believe that we have actually found a solution which will offer a better experience for the class. The class is working on future venues now and will look to formulate 2016’s calender towards the end of this upcoming sailing season. We appreciate the patience you have all shown with this matter.
Further details and NOR to follow.
Whilst I respect the decision of the Committee, I’m sure there will be several existing and prospective owners disappointed at the prospect of ‘mixing it’ at what is essentially a handicap event attended by disparate classes with low ambition. Sorry if that sounds harsh, but SailFest cannot credibly be compared with the original arrangements discussed and agreed at the AGM. The target of forty D-Zeros racing on Christchurch bay would have made quite a spectacle with great photo opportunities and produced a worthy national champion. Whatever the reasons that forced the change, the class would have done well to have kept the basic concept alive for its all-important inaugural championship. First impressions count.
Without going in to it in too much detail. The first choice venue could not happen. Unfortunately the class were only told of this less than 7 days ago leaving the very real prospect that we would not have had a coastal nationals this year.
So whilst we are tagging on to SailFest we will not be mixing it with their racing. We will have our own starts so this should help minimise the possibility of other boats influencing our racing.
I do know that plans are already quite advanced for the 2016 Nationals but can say no more at this juncture.
