Suntouched Sailboats appoints D-Zero Northern Agent

Boat Bits collect their first D-Zero consignment

Suntouched Sailboats are pleased to announce the appointment of Boat Bits of Huddersfield as their D-Zero agent for the North of England.

Rodney Cobb of Suntouched Sailboats said ‘We are impressed by the knowledge and experience at Boat Bits and are pleased that they will be supporting the D-Zero in the North. It’s great that we can now, through Boat Bits, provide regional access to the D-Zero for new fleet development and support for the current fleets in the region.”

Ben Ratcliffe of Boat Bits said “I am excited by the opportunity to be able to offer the D-Zero in our region and have already a significant number of people lining up for trial sails. I am grateful to be involved with the D-Zero as it’s an exciting boat which seems to be gathering a significant following in the UK. It’s fantastic that the D-Zero, after less than 2 years from its introduction, managed to get more race entries in the GJW Direct SailJuice Winter Series than any other class! For me that makes it a winner in terms of enthusiasm from the owners and I am confident that the class will go from strength to strength.’

D-Zero Coaching and Demo day at Yorkshire Dales SC

John Turley of JT Sailsport (D-Zero Northern Area Sales Agent) and Yorkshire Dales SC member has arranged a coaching session at Yorkshire Dales Sailing Club on Sunday 12/04/2015 with RYA Coach Peter Robinson.

This is open to any D-Zeros who wish to take part for a small fee (yet to be disclosed) and to join in club racing later in the day. Feedback from Peter will be given throughout the day with the coaching starting at 9.30AM. Peter coached his sons who and went on to win European/World Championship at junior level in the Mirror, so he knows how to teach old dogs new tricks.

The coaching will be joining with other club boats as well due to the small home fleet of D-Zeros (so far) but it will make for realistic starting practice in a mixed fleet.

Hot lunch meal deal for £4.95 at midday, luxury clubhouse with underfloor heating! (Ed’s note: I can vouch for this their clubhouse is amazing and the club is in the prettiest location I have had the pleasure of sailing at).

This may also serve as some good location specific practice for those wish to attend the D-Zero Inland Championships later on in the year which are being hosted by Yorkshire Dales SC.

There will also be the opportunity to try a D-Zero if you have not had a go and wish to see what all the fuss is about.

D-Zero Class at the RYA Dinghy Show 2015

The D-Zero on display at the RYA Dinghy Show 2014

Launched at last year’s dinghy show the Devoti D-Zero has seen a very busy 12 months. With the first boats being delivered in June 2014 the class has grown well since the launch.

With the class association formed and affiliated to the RYA in October 2014 and the Class Association Committee voted for in November 2014 at the inaugural AGM, things have been as busy behind the scenes at they have on the water.

So now at the 2015 RYA Suzuki Dinghy Show, we invite you to visit stand G14 in the West Hall near the Suzuki Main Stage and see what the boat and the class is all about. We have enthusiastic boat owners on hand over both days. The designer of the boat, Daniel Holman, will be on the stand on Saturday and will be available to talk about the original Punk and the development from a one-off concept boat to production D-Zero.

There will be 3 boats on display. 2 D-Zeros, one of which will be in a custom colour (available as a special order). One of the boats will also be sporting the D-Zero Blue rig which is aimed at sailors who are on the light side for the standard D-Zero rig. It was always part of the plan for the boat to have a smaller rig aimed at the lighter sailors. The current standard sail has shown to be remarkably weight tolerant with sailors from as low as 62kg to sailors who are 100kg+ being competitive across the wind range. The 3rd boat will be the boat that started it all, Daniel Holman’s concept boat, the Punk. The Blue rig D-Zero and the Punk will be on the adjacent stand, G10 where you will be able to talk to representatives of Devoti Sailing and Suntouched Sailboats, the manufacturers and UK distributors of the D-Zero.

Demo Events Report – Draycote Water and Island Barn

Boats ready for action at the Draycote Demo Weekend – Photo Credit Duncan Laverty

Conditions weren’t ideal at Draycote Water Sailing Club for the Devoti D-Zero road show but an enthusiastic group of Laser, Solo, Blaze, Fireball and Supernova sailors had a test sail of the D-Zero in winds ranging from 5kts on the Saturday to a maximum of 8kts on the Sunday. Participants had travelled from as far afield as Chester and London and all were delighted by the performance, with the possibility of some boat purchases in the near future.

Conditions at Island Barn were also not ideal. The demo boats are still there until this coming weekend. Please contact Island Barn SC directly to arrange a demo. More details to follow.
